The differences between weak ties and strong ties, is how much you know the person. In a weak tie you wouldn't really risk your life for the cause another person is telling you about, because you're more like acquaintances, than close friends. Strong ties are those who you know very well as a person, and you will want to help them more if they are close to you.

Social media is an effective tool for creating awareness, because it is easy, all you have to do is post something and your "friends" see it and maybe they'll post it as well, and that gets many more people to see it. The friends of your friends will raise awareness and soon enough many people have seen what is going on. Another thing that makes it effective is that it is fast! you can get a lot of people to see or hear something at one time, rather than spreading it by calling each person individually.
